ALthough Princess Mary is Royalty, she is very much real and pays close attention to what she wears which includes shiny pantyhose. You can find her face was on Vogue’s Christmas issue not simply because she is a princess, but because of her reputation as a trendsetter.

If anyone had been in doubt about Princess Mary’s presence on the world stage, her appearance in Vogue made it clear Denmark’s Crown Princess had crossed the borders of the kingdom, so to speak, and stepped to the top of the international fashion ladder. Only a few style icons belong there: those who have an understanding of and passion for clothes and hosiery fashion, and know how to share that pantyhose passion on a public stage.

Other features of Princess Mary’s style are the pointed shoes, tailored suits, wide-brimmed hats and the fact that she almost always wears shiny pantyhose or silky stockings in a natural shade. These are small elements, but that is what creates an icon: the ability to make people recognise a style through small touches such as the hosiery.

“My biggest memory is of Diana walking up the red carpet with a very, very long train,” she says. “But I don’t recall wishing that one day I would be a princess. I wanted to be a veterinarian.”

The 100,000 copies (double the usual print run) sold like hot cakes – after all, a real princess who wears shiny pantyhose regularly is not often seen on a fashion magazine cover.
